How does the Arduino Serial Monitor send the newline?

i using arduino serial monitor send command string

code: [select]
[s123][m123]

with "newline" enabled @ bottom. if turned no newline; not work. use joystick easier control; using java. however; adding "\n" string not work. arduino use enable newline?

thanks in advance!

the button @ bottom of screen (normally says "no line ending") controls line ending sent after data, when hit "send" button.
