Dimming 3 x 40w 12v incandescent bulbs via arduino to audio sequence

hi everyone,

i'm totally new arduino , trying make project happen art show friend has prior knowledge bit out of our depth. found previous article on board switching on , off rather dimming. http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=201248.0 understand quite different game?

i have video file 3 channel audio sequence (3 speakers) have 3 incandescent light bulbs dimming , switching on/off in time audio/video file. each audio track has light bulb follows along.

i read doing dimming 240v mains (i'm in uk) tricky , found 12v 40w bulbs used camper vans , sort of thing. bought this: sunfounder l293d motor stepper servo shield arduino duemilanove mega uno r3 thinking make arduino output able go 12v handle low voltage bulbs. plugged 24v dc plug arduino , blew (i thought handle 25v dc?)

if had pointers or point i'm doing wrong blow , if there way go dimming 12v bulbs arduino.

thanks , apologies having such limited knowledge.

i have found more , more articles dimming different types of bulbs on here, not 12v incandescent. these kick out 5a per bulb high - arduino able handle or better try dim 240v bulbs on mains , have lower amps?
