WDTV Play replacement box, must have browser and DLNA client - Raspberry Pi Forums

hi folks, have question regarding xbmc and/or kodi , best way go or if should?

played around original pi friend threw way, , hit it's hardware limitations, in browser instead turned small vpn tunnel safe public wifi surfing. ordered raspi pi 2 next project, while waiting ship, did little webserver project on old dell laptop wiped (old win xp took 10 hours boot up) ubuntu 15.10. amazing, 10year+ old p.o.s laptop 1 gig ram , celeron processor flies linux. took while network driver on after smooth sailing.

have pi 2 unopened in shipping box , thought "what do this?"

well, as love wdtv play device it's superb ability play every media file i've ever thrown @ it, , it's ability see twonky 4.4.4 media server running on main windows computer w/attached usb drive... replace since hate it's netflix user interface , it's youtube leanback app. it's device served me doesn't like. answer question "what instead?"?
  • ability see , play video content running off twonky dlna server
  • a functional browser can play netflix/youtube/discovery/sites don't have apps
i've read kodi/xbmc, seems it's it's own formed os (openelec) no way 'drop desktop' , fire browser. .some have written making dual boot between kodi , raspbian/chromium etc.. i'd rather avoid dual boot if , stay within 1 environment. suggestion swapping out sd cards need. again, preferable avoid , stay on 1 sd card, 1 environment.

wdtv play works flawlessly dlna client , won't sack unless raspberry alternative can wdtv - , internet browsing,

suggestions? in advance!

install raspbian , kodi application.
playing video inside browser (epiphany, kweb3) limited html5 , not large sizes (but there workarounds!). no netflix, afaik. dlna supported kodi. may need additional codecs.
