i've spent on 2 hours on ebay trying myself leonardo or micro , keep finding cheap knockoffs...

anyone else have problem? or me?

well - there's difference between knockoff, , counterfeit arduino.

basically, knockoff can identical arduino - can't have word "arduino" used it's name, or on pcb, or of other copyrighted logos , such used seller and/or manufacturer.

for instance, if took arduino design, , copied (poorly) (logos , - or maybe stuff shifted around or such?), , marketed "arduino 2014" or such - considered counterfeit arduino. many examples of out there.

now - had took design, made pcbs, had purple resist mask used, put own logo on it, , called "cr0shduino 2014" - , said in marketing/adverts "compatible arduino uno (tm)" - knockoff, , long careful wording , design, legal. can seen in seeed studios "seeeduino" , such. great design don't try pass off original arduino - rather evolution of it.

finally - , best way approach things - if made custom shaped board headers different , laid out in (maybe) better manner, put own logos, etc on - called "cr0sh's epic embedded controller" - (again) said in marketing/adverts "compatible arduino (tm) development environment" - legal - not counterfeit, , not knockoff - rather own compatible product. there more few robot controller boards out there this; nothing arduino, work same 1 (though can't plug shields them).

so - how avoid counterfeit ones? make sure seller isn't selling board logos or such suspiciously faked or whatnot. if seller isn't saying "compatible arduino" or such language - is, if seller trying mislead people thinking selling may genuine arduino - bypass one. might alert arduino team (not - can ebay pull auction - 5 more sprout instantly - non-winnable game of wack-a-mole).

if want avoid knockoff's - avoid doesn't real arduino. study real arduino looks like, , evaluate sellers claims - , price. if price isn't somewhere near arduino selling them @ (for cost - figure maybe 5-10 percent markup @ places sparkfun or adafruit) - fake - no matter how or packaging looks.

if want avoid issue - skip ebay - , purchase sparkfun, adafruit, or whatever other recognizable vendor there near you. can purchase directly arduino.cc itself:
