Logging irrigation activity - Raspberry Pi Forums

i have irrigation system controlled commercially available digital controller @ remote location. there many ways irrigation system can fail run per programmed schedule. remote monitoring not feasible , rather expensive. need system sense , log run times review when visit property. without such record, first aware of fault can when plants start die. have basic electronic , computer knowledge, wondering if knows of published project enough detail give me guide. in terms of sensors, 1 sense mains or 24v relay circuits (there 4), or motor vibration. thoughts?

use hall sensors detect current when motors turned on. sd card module rtc clock let log times. arduino better suited use less power , easier want. swap memory cards, go home , read data on them.
can put flow meters on lines measure how water flowing , when.
