Setting Acroform field properties (not values) by importing FDF?

am crazy or there way set "hard-to-set-field-properties-unless-you-use-javascript" importing fdf document. currently, when programatically adding fields acroform (some of our customers still require acroforms) can't set field properties because api doesn't expose properties reason. think remember reading can import fdf file set field properties (not field values). true?
