Thread: Can't login through gdm, but startx works (karmic)

i first installed karmic xubuntu around alpha 4, , able login via gdm: started xfce session no problem. several weeks now, login via gdm has failed. spins few seconds , goes user selection screen.

/var/log/daemon.log hints @ problem:

code:
oct 30 21:14:19 gollum gnome-session[3840]: devkit-power-gobject-warning: couldn't enumerate devices: name org.freedesktop.devicekit.power not provided .service files oct 30 21:14:19 gollum gnome-session[3840]: warning: not launch application 'metacity.desktop': unable start application: failed execute child process "metacity" (no such file or directory) oct 30 21:14:20 gollum gnome-session[3840]: warning: not launch application 'gnome-power-manager.desktop': unable start application: failed execute child process "gnome-power-manager" (no such file or directory)
huh? why gdm running gnome-session under xubuntu?

if login on console , run startx, it's fine: starts xfce session expected.

forgot mention: while clean os install, i'm using same home directory i've been carrying around ~12 years. there history there. recently, used gnome under intrepid , jaunty.

hypothesis: in home directory making gdm run gnome-session, fails.

confirmation: created test user barebones home directory. can login fine via gdm test user.

hmmmm. have whittle down what's in home directory screwing gdm.
