Best video format for Windows viewers of pdfs

i'm trying build rich-media pdf on mac windows folks can watch without having add quicktime. understand acrobat can access various other video players (such windows' built-in video player) on windows systems if qt isn't installed , embedded video in format said players can read. what's best format use these videos? .avi ok use?
